Types of Government Health Insurance Schemes in India

Updated On Jan 13, 2022

A government health insurance scheme is a health insurance initiative powered by the state or central government for the citizens. It is targeted at enhancing the region's healthcare quotient by providing low-priced insurance plans with a large amount of insurance. Typically, such policies are provided on an annual basis.

Types of Government Health Insurance Schemes

The following are some of the government health insurance schemes

1. Ayushman Bharat: It is for the economically backward segment of society. Up to INR 5 lakhs are compensated towards hospitalization costs of the covered households. Premiums are paid by the government. The covered individuals are provided with a cashless hospitalisation service. The coverage is provided on a family floater basis and the number of family members who may be compensated by the scheme is not capped.

2. Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana: A microinsurance scheme for personal accidents. It includes rural families that do not own property and persons in 45 occupational classes that are recognized under the scheme. The requirement for qualifying for this scheme is that one must be a family head or an earning member (around the poverty line) and one of the 48 vocations listed must be practiced.

3. Central Government Health Schemes: Employees of the central government are liable for the scheme. As per the terms and conditions of this plan, hospitalisation, as well as domiciliary treatment, are provided. Allopathy and homeopathy are both covered under this scheme. This available in 17 cities

4. Employees State Insurance Scheme: This was implemented in 1952 to provide financial protection in the event of sickness, injury, or death suffered by covered workers/employees. ESIS extends coverage to employees working in non-seasonal factories with a staff of at least 10 workers.

5. Rashtriya Swasthiya Bima Yojna: The scheme offers households who are listed as BPL (Below Poverty Line) health care benefits. Up to INR 30000 is given for coverage for hospitalisation expenses. A limit of 5 family members, including self, spouse, and three dependent members, may be protected. Covered families are only expected to pay INR 30 for enrolment. The premium is paid by the government.

6. Universal Health Insurance Scheme: Individual and group insurance is provided under this scheme. It includes hospitalisation, illness, and disability. The premium differs according to the family's size. To take advantage of the scheme, people living under the poverty line need to provide proper evidence.

7. Pradhan Mantri Surakhsa Bhim Yojna: It is open to all Indian people who have a bank account and are between 18 and 70 years of age. Death, total and permanent disability is covered by the scheme. INR 2 lakhs for death and total and permanent disability and INR 1 lakh for permanent partial disability are the coverage limit and INR 12 is the premium.

8. State Health Insurance Schemes: Many state-specific health insurance schemes provide hospitalisation cover, as well as coverage against accidental death and disablement for people below the poverty line/economically backward community. The amount of sum assured varies and the premium is mostly borne by the government. Some of the schemes are -Bhamashah Swasthya Bima Yojna (Rajasthan), Awaz HIS, and Karunya Arogya Surakshan Paddhathi (Kerala), Mahatma Jyoti Bhai Phule Jan Arogya Yojna (Maharashtra), Mukhyamantri Amritam Yojna (Gujarat), Yeshasvini HIS (Karnataka), West-Bengal HIS, among others.

Conclusion

Government health schemes are built to try to uplift the socially backward regions of society. Such services are critical in helping the vulnerable to afford good care for their medical conditions. Thus, the schemes are very common and they help India's poor population increase their quality of living.
