Amongst those rare commodities that seem to get dearer over time are petrol and diesel. In recent years, we have seen fuel prices increasing steadily as well. One of the most reliable ways to reduce the increasing cost of fuel is to ensure that each tankful covers more distance for your car.

Irrespective of where you reside or the car type, you must try and extract some more mileage from each tank of fuel you fill. Except to ensure that the car travels more distance with each litre of petrol, there is no other way to cope with rising fuel costs. It is important to pay attention to a few quick, effective driving steps to obtain more kilometres from each litre of petrol.

Following fuel-saving, tips will encourage you to get the most out of your fuel tank. Given below are some tips for increasing fuel efficiency

  1. Gradually Speed-Up: When gaining speed from a stationary location, a car uses the most fuel. Thus, to lower the vehicle's fuel intake, use the minimum possible throttle. Instead of speeding from zero to 100 in one go, gradually and slowly boost the pace. Accelerating quickly and slowly traveling at a higher speed can use more fuel than driving.
  2. Plan Ahead: In traffic, driving is not mileage-friendly. You have to brake numerous times and accelerate the car. Although you cannot do anything to minimize the traffic, you can monitor the traffic pattern and prepare ahead to discourage excessive braking/acceleration. For example, if a red light appears at a distance of a few hundred meters, you must slow down to allow the car to stop, instead of applying the brakes last moment.
  3. Switch of the Engines: Modern vehicles are low on the engine and do not use too much fuel if you constantly restart them. Thus, turn off the ignition while you are stuck in traffic, where the signal is red. The number of seconds left before the signal turns green is displayed by most traffic lights. If you are going to wait for a longer time, turn off the engine.
  4. Check Tires’ Air Pressure: In achieving good fuel mileage, air pressure plays a very important role. A decrease in the air pressure of the tire will increase resistance, thereby placing an extra strain on the engine and increasing the use of fuel. Thus, it is very essential to get the tires checked periodically for pressure and alignment.
  5. Use Quality Fuel: Not only does adulterated fuel decrease fuel efficiency, but it also affects the engine. Often check the fuel quality before filling up the engine. Sometimes, higher quality fuels could cost you marginally higher. They deliver better mileage and maintain the engine healthy, saving you money in the long run.
  6. Maintain Your Car: One common mistake made by car owners is that they ignore regular services, assuming they're going to save money. It is only when it breaks down that the general attitude is to repair the vehicle. But to keep the car healthy, it is important to service the vehicle and replace its components according to the intervals as recommended by the manufacturer. Only a healthy vehicle can perform optimally and have excellent fuel efficiency.
