Smog Is a Wake-up Call: Protect Yourself with Health Insurance

Updated On Nov 28, 2020

Health Insurance is an insurance product which is extremely useful in taking care of the expenses incurred by the consumer in the form of medical expenses. These medical expenses can be doctor consultation fees, medicines and medications, medical procedures like blood tests and CT scans, surgery etc. All these expenses would be covered under the Health Insurance policy and hence would be taken care of. The medical expenses paid by the consumer would be reimbursed to them directly or to their caregiver, in cases where the consumer would not be able to collect it themselves.

What is Smog?

Smog is an advanced form of air pollution. The name smog is a combination of the words smoke and fog. Smog can be either a summer or winter smog. Summer smog or photochemical is mainly caused due to the formation of Ozone in the Earth’s atmosphere, which is harmful. Winter smog is caused due to a combination of atmospheric inversions due to low temperatures and emissions from combustion. One of the primary pollutants responsible for Smog is Sulphur dioxide; secondary pollutants would be Ozone. When these pollutants directly come into contact with sunlight, they form airborne particulate matter, i.e., Smog.

Harmful Effects of Smog

The harmful effects of Smog include:

  • Increase in Asthma attacks
  • Increase in Cardiovascular disease rates
  • Increase in throat cancer rates
  • Increase in breathing issues
  • Affects animals and stunts the growth of plants.

These are very harmful, and hence people should protect themselves from these risks by getting insured to not be stressed about medical expenses because of Smog. So, consumers can choose policies to insure themselves.

Factors to Consider Before Purchasing Health Insurance

There a few factors that the consumers should be aware of before purchasing an insurance policy:

1. Coverage: The consumers should be aware of the coverage of the policy and ensure that all their requirements are satisfied. In this case, the consumers should be aware of what is covered under the insurance policy concerning health issues caused due to Smog.

2. Premium Amount: The consumers should be aware of the premium amount that would be payable every month. This is one of the most important details as this would be the amount that the consumer has to pay monthly.

3. Exclusions: Knowledge about the exclusions is equally as important as the coverage of the insurance policy. The policy would usually have exclusions like: The expenses not related to health issues related to Smog or any other environmental factor would be excluded. There would be many exclusions like the one mentioned. Hence, exclusions should be diligently noted.
