Foods That Can Trigger A Stroke

Updated On Dec 05, 2020

A stroke is a lethal health concern yet is a preventable one. Factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and poor diet other than an increase in age can put an individual at risk for stroke. However, it can be prevented by maintaining a balanced and healthy diet, including stopping the consumption of food items that can raise blood pressure and cause damage to the brain.

5 Foods That Can Trigger A Stroke

Given below is the list of food items that can trigger a stroke:

1. Chips, Cakes, and Other Baked items

Cakes, donuts, chips, and other baked goods are highly addictive products. However, these are high in trans fat, which lowers High-density lipoprotein( good cholesterol) and raises the level of low-density lipoprotein(bad cholesterol. These trans fats are known to block your arteries and raise the concentration of bad cholesterol and lipids, which promotes inflammation and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

What To Do

Stroke can be prevented by limiting the consumption of trans fat to just two grams in a day. Also, it is recommended that one should avoid consuming fast food items like French fries and other packed items. Even if you at times feel like treating your taste buds, bake your own cake, cookies, muffins, and other snacks.

2. Processed and Smoked Meat

If one has a weakness for hot dogs, sausages, bacon, or smoked sandwiches, then they should carefully consume such items as they possess a risk of stroke. These meats can cause stroke in two major ways either due to the preserving process that leaves them with a high amount of sodium and even worse is the preservatives that stop the processed meat from turning bad.

What To Do

Substitute your ham sandwich lunch for peanut butter, tuna, or any other healthier alternative. Also, you can prepare your own turkey and chicken.

3. Diet Soda

Individuals who consume diet soda everyday are said to increase their stroke risk by 48 percent. Therefore, apart from consuming a nutritious and balanced diet, one should also drink healthy beverages to keep themselves hydrated in order to safeguard themselves against stroke and other heart diseases.

What To Do

Substitute sugary drinks and sodas for water, smoothies, natural juices, and green teas. These beverages can lower the chances of getting a stroke, dehydration, and obesity.

4. Red Meat

Foods such as red meat, streak, sausages are high in saturated fats that could increase the risk of stroke. Individuals who eat more red meat are likely to have an ischemic stroke as the blockage is caused in blood vessels that supply blood to the brain because of saturated fats. Moreover, hemoglobin, which provides high iron content in red meat, may also pose to be lethal when it comes to stroke.

What To Do

Substitute red meat for fish and more poultry especially white meat. Other than this, you can also consume meatless food items like legumes, beans, tofu as an alternative for a high source of protein.

5. Canned Soups

Processed food items be it canned soups, frozen dinners, spaghetti or any other packed food contains a high amount of sodium in order to increase the flavor and make it taste fresher. Sodium or salt as mentioned on the labels of packed food is said to directly affect the risk of stroke.

What To Do

Purchase low sodium alternatives but carefully read the labels as not all products are marked as “ Low sodium” items. A better substitute is to prepare your own homemade soups and freeze the remaining portion.
