The insurance document of the vehicle is one of the few important documents that we cannot afford to lose. Steps to Get Duplicate Car Insurance Documents

It is illegal to drive a vehicle without third-party Car insurance cover in India. Thus, it is important to immediately apply for duplicate copies of the papers after learning that the original is lost. The procedure to apply for the duplicate policy is as follows.

1. Inform the Insurance provider:

This is the first thing to do, soon after learning that the policy papers are lost. Informing earlier will help them in issuing the duplicate document at the earliest. The insurer can be notified through their customer assistance number or their email id, found on the website of the company.

2. File a Complaint with the Police Department:

Some insurance companies will ask for the police FIR copies to issue duplicate documents. This copy has to be submitted along with the written application to the Car insurance company.

3. Submitting the Application with the Insurance Company:

The owner of the vehicle should submit a written application to the insurance company to get duplicate policy papers. While filling the application, it is important to feed vital details such as policy number, name of the policyholders, type of cover, date of the insurance, etc.

4. File an Indemnity Bond:

This is an important step in applying for the duplicate insurance policy and in this bond, the policyholder will offer an assurance that they will indemnify the company, if any other person apart from the nominees, make a claim for the vehicle in the future. This bond should be acknowledged by a notary and the policyholder has to pay the stamp fee to file the indemnity bond. This has to be submitted with the insurance company, to avail duplicate policy papers.
