Do’s:

Ensure you have a legitimate license and other documents before filing a claim. Lack of any of the essential documents will make your claim void.

  • File the First Information Report (FIR) while filing a claim. The first thing to do after a road accident is to inform the police. This is used by the insurance provider while processing the claim.
  • After filing the FIR, call the insurance provider. Calling them with minimum wait is the most excellent way to make the claim process simpler. Most policy providers have a gap of 24 hours to 48 hours from the time of the accident to file a claim. Thus, call your policy provider as soon as possible.
  • Go through the policy documents to find out what costs will be included or excluded in the claim.
  • You should take photos of the damages sustained by your car, the accident scene, your injuries, and the other party’s injuries. This will assist you, your insurance company and also the police in clearing any confusions or queries in future. Take note of any observers, their names and contact details. Take a photo of the insurance policy of the other party involved in the accident. This can assist you to avail third-liability claims.
  • Keep a record of expenditures that you incur in the period between the time of mishap and the day you get the final settlement.

Don’ts:

  • Do not run away from the scene of the accident even if you are at fault. Do not move your car or anyone from the scene. Check if medical help is required and arrange for it.
  • Don’t admit fault as doing so can void your claim. It is best to state the sequence of events as you memorize them, without giving a judgment.
  • Do not give any written agreement to the insurance policy provider and do not sign any documents provided by your policy provider before getting legal help.
