Overview

No matter how many options are available for your safety, they would not benefit you unless you approach them on your own. When it comes to safety on the roads, a bike insurance policy is a must. Although it can not prevent any accident or mishap from happening but definitely can bring a lot of relief in the form of compensation against damages, loss, bodily injuries and death, which may arise after the incident.

Every year, more than a lakh people succumb to road accident injuries. It indicates that buying a bike insurance policy is a necessity and not just a legal compulsion. Being cautious and complying with the traffic rules is a moral duty of each and every bike rider. Different bike insurance policies are designed in different manners. Some insurance plans offer protection to you, while some protect the third party, which means, if you damage someone else’s property or hurt them in a collision with your bike, then your insurance plan will compensate those damages on your behalf.

A comprehensive bike insurance cover provides coverage for the losses sustained either by you or by the third parties who suffer in an accident with the involvement of your bike. However, in the wake of rise in liability accident cases, the third-party insurance policy has been declared mandatory by the Indian Motor Tariff.

What Is the Process to Pay the Fine?

If you get caught for not holding an insurance policy while driving a vehicle, you will be required to stop your vehicle on the roadside or nearby the booth of a policeman. The police officer might ask you to produce your driving license along with the registration certificate of the vehicle. On showing these documents, you will be told to leave and not be charged with any punishment, but if you are unable to display such documents, in such a case, for driving a bike or any other vehicle without an insurance policy, the officer can immediately issue you a challan which you will either have to pay through an online mode or an offline mode.

Online Method to Pay the Fine

  • Visit the official website of the state transport department
  • Search for the section of e-challan payment or payment for a traffic violation. Once you find the tab, click it to proceed.
  • Fill up the vehicle number and challan number or any other details pertaining to the traffic violation. After that, you will have to fill up the captcha code.
  • Pay for the amount of challan using your debit or credit card. You can also make the payment through the digital wallets associated with the payment system.
  • After making the payment, you will receive a message for confirmation of receipt.

Offline Method to Pay the Fine

If you do not want to pay for the challan through an online payment system, in such a situation, you can reach the nearest traffic police station in your area. Ask the concerned person there about the amount of pending penalty which you are required to pay. Clear all the dues, after which you are absolutely free.

After making the payment for the challan, you can again drive your bike or scooter without any hassle in the future. But, failing to pay the penalty may result in a higher fine when you will be caught for the next time.

Tips to Drive Your Bike Responsibly on the Road

Here are some tips following which you can avoid getting fined while driving bike on the road:

  • Store a hard copy of all essential documents such as Driving License, Registration Certificate, and Pollution Certificate of your vehicle.
  • Store a soft copy of all these relevant documents in your mobile phone as well.
  • Ensure that you do not miss the renewal of your insurance policy to avoid fines.
  • Do purchase an insurance cover for every vehicle before driving it on the road. A third-party insurance policy is compulsory, therefore, hold at least this basic insurance plan to avoid any punishment.
