Steering Wheel failure may be rare but they can be a big hassle. Here’s why they happen and what you should do in case of a failure.

Failure of parts or need for repair is a common occurrence for cars. Moreover, they cannot be entirely eliminated due to wear and tear. One of the rare things that happen to cars is the steering wheel failing. However, it can happen. Here is what you need to do in case it does happen to you.

Why Does A Steering Wheel Fail?

There are four scenarios in which a steering wheel can fail. A loss of power is the most likely reason for a steering wheel to fail. This happens when the hydraulic pipe breaks or is cut off for some reason. This does not happen instantly. A good sign that such failures could happen is that your steering wheel begins to feel heavier over time. The steering wheel can also fail if the mechanical linkage breaks. Steering can also pull to one side when a tyre is soft. It is also possible that your steering wheel is locked.

What Should You Do When a Car Power Steering Wheel Fails?

If the power of the wheel is cut, you will need all your strength to manoeuvre it. So it is best to stop as soon as you can. Do not try to drive to the workshop, instead call the mechanic to come to you. Switch on your hazard lights and try to park in a safe place.

In the case your mechanical links break, you will not be able to maneuver at all, your best chances are to press the break and stop the car wherever you can.

A soft tyre can also result in the lower maneuvering capability of the car. However, it is not as extreme as other scenarios. For this you can drive to the nearest mechanic and get it checked.

If your steering wheel is locked, here are some things you can try. First, try to move the car a metre, either by letting it roll slightly or pushing it. Careful to not do this on a slope.

Second you can try jacking up your car, removing the load from the wheels. If this does not work, it is time to contact a mechanic.

Roadside Assistance Car Insurance Cover

A Roadside Assistance Cover is a car insurance add-on which helps you with any breakdowns and emergency services. It comes especially handy when you are in an unknown location. This add-on is available with standalone own-damage and comprehensive car insurance plans.

Takeaway

In a nutshell, a steering failure is rare but can be deadly. However, there are ways to know when this is happening. In most cases it is best to stop in the safest spot close to you. Switch on your hazard lights and ask the mechanic to come to your location. If the fixes for the jammed steering wheel do not work, it is best to call a mechanic as well. The cost of repairing major parts of the car can be high; you can, however, avail of add-ons that provide compensation specially for these repairs. Car insurance also provides roadside assistance as an add-on cover which can be useful in such situations.
