Being asked to pull over your car by the traffic police is not uncommon in India. But, this situation may send you panicking even if you were adhering to all the traffic rules. Most people are not aware of what they should do when asked to pull over by the traffic police. This article will give you the do’s and don’ts when you are asked to pull over.

What Should You Do If Your Car Gets Pulled Over By The Traffic Police?

What Should You Do If Your Car Gets Pulled Over By The Traffic Police?

When you are asked to pull over by a police officer, remain calm and polite. Make sure to pull over at the side and do not panic. You have nothing to worry about unless you have broken any traffic law. The following are the things you can do in case you are being pulled over by the traffic police -

  • Ask For Why You Have Been Asked To Pull Over

Once you stop your car, you can politely ask the police officer as to why he pulled your car over. Avoid arguing with the officer and remain calm if he questions you. Police officers usually ask drivers to pull over to check if they are following all the traffic rules. If you are being pulled over, it does not have to mean that you have committed a crime.

  • Produce The Documents

Every driver must carry certain documents with him/ her at all times while driving the car in India. The mandatory documents are your driver’s license, car’s registration certificate, Pollution Under control certificate and your car insurance documents. If you are above the age of 50, you will be required to have a medical certificate to indicate that you are medically fit to drive a car. These documents are legally mandatory. Not carrying the documents can be a punishable offence and can be fined. The police might have stopped you for a routine check and asked you to produce these documents. Make sure you provide them with the documents without panicking.

  • Stay Polite

Being polite to the police officer is more beneficial than arguing with the officer. Politely apologizing for your mistake will probably get the officer to let you go with a warning. Arguing with the traffic police may get things worse and end up filing you a challan (fine). Therefore, being polite and apologizing for minor mistakes will cut you some slack.

  • Prosecution Slip

In case you have been handed a prosecution slip, make sure that you check the details on it like your name, contact number, details of the offence, details of the car, name and address of the court trial, the name and signature of the police officer.

Why Is Car Insurance Important?

Having at least third-party car insurance is mandatory according to the Motor Vehicle Act. Purchasing a car insurance policy will not only keep you legally safe but also provide financial assistance in times of need. It could be for compensating for the loss of the third party or your own loss. Having car insurance will be the best protection you can give your prized possession. Ensure that you purchase car insurance that offers maximum coverage in order to be safe while driving.

Take Away

Being pulled over by the traffic police is unavoidable no matter how much you try. The best way to keep yourself safe from any legal issue is by adhering to the laws and being polite with the police offer. Make sure that you carry all the mandatory documents with you while driving along with ensuring that they are all valid. Happy driving!
