When you purchase a new car, you will have to apply for a temporary registration number. This is because the government has made it mandatory for all cars to be registered to legally ply on roads. Read this article to understand how you can apply for a temporary registration number.

How To Get Temporary Registration Number For Your Car?

What Is a Temporary Register Number?

A temporary registration number for a car is required when the car is newly purchased and it is yet to be assigned a permanent registration number by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). This temporary number is valid for the term of one month and can be used to identify the vehicle until it is provided with a permanent registration number.

The temporary registration number is usually assigned by the car dealership or the showroom at the time of purchase on behalf of the owner of the car. The permanent registration of the car should be done by the owner before the temporary registration number expires.

Steps To Get Temporary Registration Number

When you purchase a car, the showroom provides your car with a temporary register number. Make sure that you get this number before the car leaves the showroom. After this, you should ensure that you register your car permanently with the RTO within one month. The temporary register number should be under the name of the owner of the car. You need to apply for a temporary register number before applying for a permanent register number. You can follow the below-given steps to temporarily register your car-

1. Go to the PARIVAHAN website and download Form 20. Fill this form to apply for a temporary register number.

2. After filling Form 20, go to your nearest RTO office with the other required documents and submit it in whichever zone you reside.

3. You will be required to produce certain documents to process your temporary register number. So make sure you take these documents along with you.

4. Pay the service tax and fee as per the specifications.

5. You will then receive your temporary registration number.

PARIVAHAN has not yet availed the facility to get a temporary register number online yet. So, you will have to complete this process offline at your nearest RTO in your zone.

What Are The Documents Required For Temporary Registration?

Document verification is an absolutely vital process while getting your temporary registration number. Therefore, these are the documents that you must carry to the RTO at the time of temporarily registering your car -

1. You must carry Form 20 which is basically an application form containing the details of your car and you.

2. You will also need Form 21 which is a sales certificate.

3. You will also need your car insurance certificate.

4. Address proof, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, and your pan card are important documents that you will need to get a temporary registration number.

5. If you don’t have a pan card, you can take Form 60 and 61.

Make sure that you carry these documents to ensure a hassle-free process of getting your temporary registration number.
