Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules of India, sections 51 and 177, number plates that go against the prescribed format of the state can be punished. The current fine for this fine is Rs.1,000, however, the exact amount may vary from region to region.

The RTO prescribes the format for the number of vehicles according to their type and uses accordingly:

  • White background with black writing for private vehicles
  • Yellow background with red writing for temporarily registered vehicles
  • Yellow background with black writing for commercial transport
  • Yellow background with black writing for rental cabs

How to Get a Number Plate for Your New Car?

After you buy a new car either you or the car dealer will need to apply for a temporary registration number for the vehicle. This number will be valid for a month while you receive a permanent registration number. After you get this number you can purchase a number plate with the given number both the front and back of the car. Make sure to use the collect colouring as prescribed and mentioned above. If you still feel that you would like to go with a customized font for your car number plate ensure that it is still visible from a distance and is within the guidelines.
