Car insurance renewal is a process that you should be familiar with. Learn all about the documents required for it.

When you purchase a new car, you will likely have been provided with a one-year motor insurance policy for your car. Or, you may have selected one on your own. Either way, once the tenure of your car insurance policy is approaching expiry, it is important to purchase new car insurance or to renew the existing policy.

Documents Required For Car Insurance Renewal

Importance of Renewing Car Insurance

The following are the reasons why it is important for you to renew your car insurance policy:

  • Be A Law Abiding Citizen

It is mandatory by law according to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1989 that you have a valid car insurance renewal policy when you drive your car on Indian roads. Therefore, in order to be a law-abiding citizen as well as a responsible person, you must renew your car insurance policy before its expiry.

  • Get Financial Protection

Car insurance also helps you by giving you financial protection in case any accident or calamity befalls you or your vehicle. If you get into an accident and a third party is injured or sustains damage to their vehicle, you will be financially and legally liable for it if you do not have any car insurance during this time. Furthermore, you will have to pay for any repairs to your own vehicle. To avoid this heavy financial liability, make sure your car insurance is renewed on time.

Documents Required To Renew Car Insurance

The documents required for the renewal of a car insurance policy have been standardised across all insurance companies by IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India). The required documents are to be submitted to the car insurance company along with the insurance renewal form. The following is the list of documents required for the same:

  • Identity proof issued by the government (e.g. PAN card, Aadhar card, passport)
  • Proof of address (e.g. driving license, passport)
  • Recent photograph
  • Vehicle registration number
  • Recent photograph
  • RC or registration certificate of the car
  • PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate
  • Policy number of the old motor insurance policy
  • Credit card or debit card details for online banking

Takeaway

In order to be a law abiding citizen and to ensure that you have financial protection for yourself, make sure that you renew your car insurance policy before the expiry date. It is important to make note of the documents required for the same and to submit the complete set of documents alongside the insurance renewal form. It is mandatory by law to have a valid car insurance policy active for your vehicle when driving it on Indian roads. For this reason, make sure you renew your policy in time.
