Essential Two Wheeler Repair and Maintenance You Can Do Yourself

As a little do-it-yourself maintenance could not only keep your beauty safe but also save you money. So, here is what you can do.

1. Check Air in Tyres

Before starting a ride, you must check the tyre pressure before starting the ride as over a period of time, tyres tend to lose pressure. Hence they need to be refilled at regular intervals. Refilling in bike tyres can be done at the petrol pump by paying a tip. Ensure that the front and rear tyres have optimum level pressure. This is because fully inflated tyres increase the fuel efficiency of the motorcycle.

2. Lubricate Chain And Sprocket Regularly

The chain of your bike may become loose over a period of time. But as the chain, along with the belt and the shaft send power from the transmission to the rear wheel, it needs to be well maintained so as to ensure a smooth ride. The motorcycle chain should be cleaned and lubricated regularly. You can clean the chain with a hard paint brush and remove the accumulated dirt and apply the lubricant. This will keep the chain smooth and ensure its carefree running.

3. Change Coolant

Coolant prevents the engine of your bike from overheating, over heating, or getting corroded. So, you should keep a check on the coolant level of your bike and change it whenever it seems necessary. To change the coolant, you should remove any vital bodywork to get access to the coolant drain bolt and place a drain pan below the engine and remove the bolt. Remove the radiator cap to ensure everything drains. After the process, reinstall the drain bolt. Use a funnel to fill the coolant in the appropriate quantity and then put back the radiator cap. Check the coolant level when the engine has been cooled. Add more coolant if required, as per the owner’s manual.

4. Replace Engine Oil

It is extremely important to change your bike’s oil as it lubricates the engine thereby reducing the friction between the parts. These days, many bikes come with a dipstick that keeps the riders informed about the minimum and maximum oil levels in it. Otherwise, you should keep checking the level and get it replaced when it reaches the minimum level. Generally, it is recommended to change the engine oil after 3 months.

5. Check the Battery Regularly

If you do not maintain your bike’s battery, then it may turn in to be a very costly affair. If you do not feel confident enough to handle your bike’s battery, then you can take help from an experienced rider or a mechanic. Also, before starting the bike, look out for battery leaks or blown fuse. In case you do not have to ride the bike, you can remove the battery and store it on a wooden surface or cardboard.
