Check Bike Insurance Details by Registration Number
To own a bike insurance plan for every two-wheeler vehicle is a compulsion, as per the Indian Motor Tariff. The compulsory bike insurance policy is the third party insurance plan, which offers compensation for injury, property damage, or death incurred by a third party due to the involvement of your bike. However, if you have a comprehensive bike insurance policy, you can also get coverage for the damages suffered by your own bike or scooter.
No matter which insurance cover you own, the registration number of your bike will always be required to purchase the bike insurance policy. Let’s understand this number and how it can be used to check the bike insurance status.
What Is a Bike Registration Number?
Any vehicle that is plying on the public roads in India has an official and legal identity number known as a registration number. The district-level RTO of all the Indian states is an authority that is responsible for issuing a registration number for every newly bought vehicle. Every individual who has bought a new vehicle must themselves get their vehicle registered at a district RTO within a maximum of 1 month of buying the new vehicle. A unique number is given to the vehicle as soon as it gets registered. This number needs to be printed on a metal plate and should be attached in the front and back of the vehicle.
The registration number has a format of AA DD AA DDDD, where ‘A’ denotes the alphabets and ‘D’ signifies the numerical digits. The first two alphabets are the code of the state, where the bike is registered. The next two digits denote the district code and the next two alphabets signifies the ongoing series of the RTO for vehicle classification. In the registration number, the last four digits stand for the unique identification number of your bike. Therefore, if a bike holds a number which is DL 06 AB 1877, DL would show that the bike is registered in New Delhi, 06 represents the district of the state, AB would imply the RTO sequence and 1877 would characterise the unique identification number of the bike.
The first six figures of different two-wheeler vehicles could be the same, but the last four digits can never be the same as they are created to help in identifying the bike.
Use of the Registration Number
Apart from giving an identity to the bike, the registration number is useful in various ways too:
