What Is A Bike Registration Number?

Every two-wheeler, when purchased, is issued a unique registration number when the owner registers it at their local Regional Transport Office or RTO. It is compulsory to do so by law and in order to be issued a registration number, within 30 days of purchase. After registration, the registration number functions as an identification number for the vehicle as well as its owner. It is also printed upon the bike’s number plate which must be displayed upon the bike.

Steps To Find Bike Insurance Details With Registration Number

If you have purchased a bike insurance plan online, then in order to retrieve the details of your insurance plan you have to simply enter the vehicle registration number on the insurance company’s website. When the insurance policy is purchased, the registration number is used to identify your vehicle in the policy and the details of it may be accessed by the government or the RTO. You can also retrieve details of the insurance policy using the registration number from the websites of the following organisations:

  1. IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India)
  2. Regional Transport Office (RTO) where your bike is registered
  3. State Transport Department
  4. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (www.parivahan.gov.in/parivahan)
  5. Insurance Information Bureau (www.iib.gov.in)

If your bike is new and has not yet been assigned a registration number, you will have to get it registered at your local RTO and apply for a registration certificate in order for one to be issued for your bike.
