Here Are Some Tips To Maintain Your Bike Or Two-Wheeler

Updated On May 05, 2021

After a few years, or even a few months, it is very normal to fail to care for or maintain our bikes. However, in order to keep its efficiency at its best and ensure that we have a trouble-free and safe ride, it is necessary to perform some basic maintenance on a regular basis.

Many of the basic bike maintenance tasks are simple enough that we can complete them without assistance at home. In addition to the tips mentioned below for keeping our two-wheelers in good condition, it is also a good idea to have them covered with a bike insurance online. This is because a bike insurance policy would cover you and your two-wheeler in the event of an accident on the road.

Here Are Some Tips To Maintain Your Bike Or Two-Wheeler

  • Regularly Change Engine Oil and Clean Oil Filter

Your bike's engine oil should be changed on a regular basis. Remove the drain plug from the sump and allow the old oil to drain into the drain tray given. Don't forget to inspect the drain plug's washer. If this plug is in good working order, replace the drain plug. Remove the old oil filter and replace it with a new one. Remove the old oil filter and dispose of it.

  • Check the Air Filter

The air filter on two-wheelers is either foam or paper-based. If the element is made of paper, you can easily tap it to remove the dust. Foam elements, on the other hand, should be washed in a solvent before being dried and reoiled. If the element is broken or very dirty, however, you can replace it.

  • Pivots, Livers, and Oiling Cables

Since pivots, liver and cables are exposed elements, these should be regularly lubricated for ensuring smooth operation. To do the same, it is recommended to apply some drops of aerosol lubricant or light oil to those ends of the cable that are exposed, brake pedal, liver pivots of the handlebar, stand pivots, and lever pivots of a gear change.

  • Spark Plugs

As the distance between the electrodes becomes out of adjustment, the spark plugs begin to display signs of wear and tear. With the aid of a feeler scale, measure the gaps in the spark plug and then attempt to change the distance by bending the electrodes on the side. Because of the combustion process, there would be a build-up of deposits on the firing ends. If the pluses are badly corroded or dirty, you may need to repair them.

  • Clutch Adjustment

Proper clutch adjustment is needed for smooth gear changes and to avoid clutch slip or drag. The majority of clutches are driven by cable and have a thread and locknut adjuster at each end to set the free-play. Check that the engine's idles are running at the right speed when it's fully warmed up. Most carburetors have a knob for changing the idle speed, which is usually located on the carburetor's side.

Even if you follow the above tips, your bike will wear out over time and you will be unable to regulate the ageing of your prized possession. If you have a new bike insurance policy from one of the best bike insurance companies, however, you will be able to make a bike insurance claim for the replacement of any parts if they are damaged. So, keep the above suggestions in mind and perform routine maintenance on your two-wheeler to keep your bike happy.
