Here is your list of Dos and Don'ts for filing a car insurance claim

A car insurance claim refers to the act of raising a request to an insurance company for providing the financial compensation for the loss/damage suffered by the insured’s car.

On the basis of coverage, there are 3 types of car insurance plans - third party plan, comprehensive plan and standalone own-damage plan. As per the act of India Motor Tariff 2002, it is mandatory for every car owner to have at least a third party car insurance policy. No matter what kind of policy you have, the claim process for each one is alike.

Here are some dos and don’ts which one must practice while filing a claim for car insurance to make the entire process hassle-free and easy.

DOs

DON’Ts

Inform the Insurance Company

The foremost thing that you must do is to inform the insurance company from whom you have purchased your car insurance plan. They take rapid action to inspect all the damages occurred due to the accident to offer the required coverage.

Try Not To Leave the Accident Spot

If it is not an emergency, try not to leave the accident spot. Leaving the spot might tamper proof of damages bringing down the coverage amount that you might get against your claim.

File FIR in Case of Third Party Losses

After informing the insurance company, you must file an FIR in case the unfortunate event has resulted in serious third party losses such as death.

Refrain From Hiding Facts to Insurance Company

People often tend to hide facts from their car insurance company. Refrain from such a practice as it can result in serious consequences, even the nullification of insurance plan.

Submit Required Documents

Submit all the required documents so that the claim process can get completed at the earliest. You are required to submit an ID proof, a photocopy of a driver's licence, and repair invoice.

Avoid Any Monetary Settlement With Third Party

After an accident, the third party might approach you for a quick monetary settlement against your damages. Avoid getting into such settlements. Insurance policy coverages are generally higher than the amount which often third parties offer to get out of the situation.

Try Taking Photos for Proof

If possible, you should try to take photos of your damaged car photographs act as crucial proof that supports your car insurance claim.

Don’t Get The Car Repaired Before Getting The Coverage

Never repair your car before getting the coverage amount against your claim. Repairing a car damaged by accident can lower the amount drastically.

Read the Coverage Note Properly

A coverage note contains information about the accident and its intensity. It also contains the amount that you will get from the car insurance company against your claim.

Do Not Drive the Damaged Car

Even in the case of minor accidents, you might get the insurance policy claims. So, it is a bold decision to avoid driving the damaged car.

Hence, these are the major DOs and DON’Ts that you should remember while filing a car insurance claim.
