How To Check Vehicle Registration And Owner Information Online?

Riding a bike without an RC is a punishable offence in India. If you are confused about what an RC is, why it’s important, and how to get one, this blog is for you. An RC, also called a Registration Certificate, is a legal document that proves that your vehicle is registered with the RTO (Regional Transport Office). According to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, obtaining a vehicle’s RC is mandatory.

What Is A Registration Certificate?

A vehicle registration certificate or RC is a very crucial document for all bike owners and is issued by the government of India. This is because it is the vehicle registration certificate that validates that your vehicle has now officially been registered at the regional transport office or the RTO. Owing to its importance, the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 has made it a mandatory requirement to have an RC document. It is also mandatory for you to have RC with you at all times when riding your bike on Indian roads.

RC contains some of the most important details about your bike such as the following:

  • Registration date and number
  • Engine number
  • Chassis number
  • Model of the bike
  • Type and color of the bike
  • Fuel type
  • The manufacturing date of the bike

Now, let us also understand how to check the RC certificate online, but first, let’s also read how to get RC.

Importance of Registration Certificate

There are several reasons why you must have a registration certificate for your vehicle. The prominent ones are as follows:

  • Ownership Proof: It indicates that you are the legal owner of the vehicle, which is essential in resolving any ownership disputes or transferring ownership that may arise in the future.
  • Legal Compliance: According to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, carrying a vehicle RC is mandatory to legally drive a vehicle on roads in India.
  • Prevent Fines: If you are caught riding a bike without an RC, the traffic police will charge you with a fine of Rs. 5000. If you continue to do the same, the fine for the consecutive offence will be Rs. 10,000.
  • Insurance Claims: Having an RC is crucial for obtaining motor insurance and for filing insurance claims.
  • Prevent Thefts: In case your vehicle is stolen, the registration certificate will help the authority in identifying and recovering the stolen vehicle by matching details from the RC.
  • Allows Transfer of Ownership and Resale: A valid RC is crucial for reselling your bike and transferring the ownership of the vehicle.
  • Vehicle Identification: Your vehicle’s RC contains various information like registration number, chassis number, engine number, make, model, month and year of manufacturing. This information may come in handy whenever it is required or for official records.

How to Obtain A Registration Certificate For Your Bike?

Follow a detailed step-by-step process to secure a registration certificate for your bike:

Step 1: Vehicle Purchase and Collating Documents

Purchase a bike from an authorised dealer or private seller (if buying a second-hand vehicle). Then, collect all the necessary documents such as the identity proof, address proof, sales invoice, roadworthiness certificate, pollution under control certificate (PUCC), and vehicle insurance documents.

Step 2: Visit The Nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO)

Find the nearest RTO, schedule an appointment, and fill out the application form for vehicle registration.

Step 3: Documents Submission

Once you have filled the form correctly, submit it with the required documents to the designated RTO officer. The RTO will examine your documents, cross-check details and initiate the verification process.

Step 4: Fee Submission

Pay the required fees for vehicle registration, road tax, and others. The fee structure differs based on vehicle age, engine, capacity, type, and state regulation.

Step 5: Inspection and Verification of Two-Wheeler and Documents

After examining the authenticity of documents, the RTO will send an officer to inspect your vehicle to verify the vehicle’s condition and that it complies with safety standards.

Step 6: Vehicle Registration Certificate Registration and Issuance

After verification, the RTO will provide you with a vehicle registration number and issue the registration certificate in your name.

Step 7: Display and Renewal

Once you have received your vehicle’s RC, you must display it by affixing the assigned number plates with the provided registration number on your bike.
