Penalties Imposed For Riding A Motorcycle Without Insurance

The legal and monetary obligations resulting from harm or loss to third-party assets or life, as well as harm to your two-wheeler, are covered by motor insurance. Authorities may fine you if you drive your bike without bike insurance.

A vehicle insurance policy refers to a type of security that covers damages incurred by you or other people who are injured in an accident. Due to an increase in liability accident claims, the Indian government has made third-party insurance coverage mandatory. To know more about penalties without bike insurance, read on.

Is It Illegal To Ride A Bike Without Bike Insurance?

Without a valid two-wheeler insurance coverage, it is unlawful to use a two-wheeler on a public road. To be in compliance with the law, your bike, scooter, or moped must be covered by a Third-party Bike Insurance Policy. In India, a third-party policy is required for all motor vehicles.

What Is The Penalty Fee For Driving A Two-Wheeler Without Coverage?

The revised Motor Vehicle Act of 2019 stipulates that driving a two-wheeler lacking insurance carries a 2,000 rupee fine and/or a maximum sentence of three months in jail. If you have been found guilty of driving a motorcycle or scooter without insurance a second time, you might face a 4,000 rupee fine and/or up to three months in jail. Prior to the change to The Motor Vehicles Act, the fine for operating a two-wheeler lacking insurance was set at Rs. 1,000.

What Happens If A Two-Wheeler Rider Is Apprehended Without Insurance?

If a traffic law enforcement officer stops you to check your car, slow down and pull over to the side of the roadway. You will be required to present the two-wheeler and driver-related paperwork to the officer.

If you present all the required documentation and insurance papers, you won't be penalised. However, you will be issued a challan if your two-wheeler lacks a valid bike insurance plan or even if you neglect to present the driver/vehicle-related paperwork. The challan can be paid for both online and offline.

What Are The Guidelines For Avoiding A Challan When Driving A Two-wheeler?

Following are some pointers for driving a two-wheeler without incurring a fine -

1. Keep hard copies of all necessary paperwork, including your driver's licence, registration certificate, PUC certificate, and insurance document, in your car.

2. Bring digital copies of all the aforementioned documents with you on your phone.

3. Make sure to update the two-wheeler insurance policy before it expires.

4. Make sure you have insurance for any car you use to travel on public roads.

5. To protect yourself against disability or death, you must also obtain the required PA (Personal Accident) policy in addition to bike insurance. Unlike bike insurance, you don't need to get separate PA policies for each car you own, even if you do.

6. Finally, always adhere to the traffic laws and speed limits when operating a two-wheeled vehicle.

Different nations have different penalties for driving without insurance, but some of the more frequent ones are as follows -

1. Your driving privileges will be suspended if you are caught driving without motor insurance.

2. Additionally, the registration of your car will also be revoked.

In India, there are primarily two forms of auto insurance - third-party and comprehensive only.

The comprehensive auto insurance coverage additionally knows how to take care of your own loss/damage in the instance of an accident, unlike the third party limited insurance, which only gives risk coverage in the instance of damage/losses made to a third party.

Endnotes

Without even a two-wheeler insurance coverage, you can purchase a two-wheeler from a dealer. But to at least register the vehicle, you must purchase the Third-party 2-wheeler Insurance Cover.
