The coronavirus has been devastating the world for almost two years now. Since the beginning of it, there have been several waves of infections and new strains of the original virus. Basic Information on the Omicron Variant

The Omicron variant is a coronavirus strain that has been detected in several COVID patients over the past week or so. It has already spread to over 30 countries with cases rising rapidly. The Delta variant had already been wreaking havoc when this new variant was detected in South Africa. Although investigations are ongoing, it has been found that the strain might have originally emerged in Europe before it was detected in South Africa. Since its discovery, the Omicron variant has been found in people from over 35 countries across the world. The variant is extremely fast when it comes to infecting people. This is why nations all across the world are taking note.

Although till now, the Omicron variant has not been deadly, scientists have stated that the investigation process is still at a very early stage. This is why it is crucial to be alert about the developments. Many nations have already started enforcing travelling restrictions and border controls. Nevertheless, WHO officials have stated that it is simply not enough to rely on these measures as personal hygiene, social distancing regulations and such COVID measures should still be taken care of with priority.

Status of the Omicron Variant in India

Over 20 people have been tested with the Omicron variant in India. The patients have been found in five states across the country, with the latest cases found in Delhi. The Omicron variant has mostly been found in those COVID patients who have recently come back to the country from abroad, and people who have come in contact with them. State governments, therefore, have placed increased importance on systems to track and trace the patients who have been detected. This is being done in order to prevent the virus from spreading more than it already has.

Should I Get Vaccinated?

Vaccination is of the utmost importance currently. WHO has also stated that the Omicron variant is not deadlier than the Delta and existing vaccines should work against it. Not only is the vaccine important, but also COVID regulations which have been enforced since the beginning. All the approved vaccines have been seen to reduce the deadliness of the virus. So, it is important to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Vaccines are available at registered government centres for free, as well as at private centres with a small fee. Even if you do get affected with the new variant, hopefully, you will not be severely sick, if you have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Endnotes

Although it is important to take note of the Omicron variant, one must also take care to not panic. Instead, measures such as vaccines, social distancing, using masks and sanitizers should also be undertaken with diligence. To stop and limit the spread of this new variant, it is the responsibility of everyone. For the larger good of the society and to stop any other devastating waves of infections, everyone must comply with the necessary rules and regulations.
