Updated On Jun 25, 2020

Ever since the spread of coronavirus all around the world, people have started taking multiple measures to prevent themselves from nature’s wrath in the form of COVID-19 disease.

Right from wearing masks to drinking hot water many times in a day, people are putting in their best efforts in everything.

While research on specific coronavirus treatment is still on, terms like quarantine and isolation are floating around since the very beginning.

Quarantine and isolation are two terms that people using interchangeably at the present time, but it is prominent to understand the importance of both as well as what makes the two terms different.

Here are a few points for you to take into consideration.

What is meant by quarantine during coronavirus?

Used in the times of outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics, quarantine is an effective means of public protection.

In the present condition, it can be defined as the state of separating and restricting the movement of people, who are exposed or are potentially exposed to the people having coronavirus infection. Quarantine is practiced to lower the chances of a person transferring coronavirus infection to others.

During COVID-19 pandemic, countless people have been taken in quarantine in countries by their respective government. And India is not an exception.. Many are being asked to stay in self-quarantine, by staying in their home and away from other people as much as possible for a 14-day period.

Who is being told to practice quarantine?

Quarantine or self-quarantine is for people who have come in close contact with a person, who is confirmed to have coronavirus infection. Close contact refers to being within 2 meters or 6 feet from a person infected with COVID-19 for a significant amount of time. Note that close contact also includes living with, visiting, or sharing a closed space with a person infected with coronavirus infection. Lastly, learn that even if a COVID-19 infected person coughs upon you, you qualify to be in that person’s close contact.

Who should practice isolation or self-isolation?

Any person who is having COVID-19 disease is required to undergo isolation or self-isolation in a specific room, which is away from other members of the house.

In a case like such, it is advisable for coronavirus patient to use a separate bedroom, and even a separate bathroom, if possible. Furthermore, the patient should eat or be fed only in their room away from other household members. It is even advised to keep all household items like plates, drinking glasses, cups, mugs, towels, bedding, and other items of coronavirus patient separate from other members of the house.

Coronavirus quarantine and coronavirus isolation – The final difference

First and foremost, understand that the aim of both, quarantine and isolation is the same, i.e., to prevent further spread of COVID-19 disease.

Secondly, it is only meant for people who are infected or are confirmed cases of COVID-19.

When it comes to differences between the two, here are the following points to note:

  • While quarantine is carried out by people who have come in contact with the coronavirus patients, isolation is carried out by people confirmed with coronavirus infection.

  • While quarantine lasts for the period of the upper limit of the incubation period of the virus, i.e., 14 days, isolation is carried out until the individual is free of symptoms and tests negative for the coronavirus.
