Below is a list of types of healthy food items that you should add to your diet to have a strong immune system, especially in these tough times of the spread of the contagious coronavirus disease.

Vitamin C and Vitamin D

Among all vitamins, Vitamins C and Vitamin D are great for strengthening your immune system and combating diseases.

Thus, you should add citrus fruits and vegetables like amla, lemon, orange, broccoli, kale, etc to your daily diet as they are a good source of vitamin C. Also, eat mushrooms, soy beverage, egg yolks as they are a good source of vitamin D.

Note that people with coronavirus infection are advised to increase the intake of Vitamin C.

Protein and Zinc

Protein and Zinc are also involved in promoting a healthy immune system. You can add protein and zinc to your diet by eating fish, chicken, lean beef, turkey, dairy products, eggs, chickpeas, cashews and pumpkin seeds among other protein and zinc rich food items.

Antioxidant-rich Foods

Increasing antioxidant-rich foods is another way to boost your immune power. The compound present in such foods empowers your body to heal wounds and infections.

Some antioxidant-rich foods include papaya, sweet potatoes, citrus, grapes, apples, tea, dark chocolate, broccoli, spinach, bell peppers, onions, beetroots, cranberries and mushrooms.

Besides these food items, turmeric also has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is suggested to have a glass of turmeric milk daily to boost the immune system.

Probiotics

Include probiotic foods in your diet as they can give your immune system a boost. Yogurt is a natural dietary source of probiotics. It helps your body form good bacteria. You can choose plain low-fat or nonfat yogurt and add berries, nuts and add a little honey to it for sweetness. Yogurt is also rich in protein and zinc along with probiotics.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids strengthen the immune system by enhancing the functioning of immune cells. Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include nuts, salmon, flaxseed, walnuts, soybean oil, chia seeds, eggs, soy milk, and yogurt.

Natural Anti-Virals

Some of the natural antiviral food items include garlic, basil (tulsi) leaves, ginger, oregano, peppermint and rosemary. You can add these antivirals to your daily food items to keep your immune system healthy and strong.

Final Words

The immune system is the defense system of our body. It protects organisms such as viruses or bacteria from invading cells. Please note that when a foreign element enters our body, our body puts up its defense in place. And that defense is our immune system. Thus, by increasing the intake of the above-mentioned food items, you can strengthen your immunity system and keep yourself safe from the risk of falling ill, especially in these tough times.
