Best Coping Tips to Self Quarantine Effectively At Home

Updated On Jun 25, 2020

Self-quarantining at home means to stay at home and refrain from any contact with other individuals over a period of time to prevent the spread of an infectious disease.

In current times of the coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak, self-quarantining is advised to anyone who has developed or is being exposed to the disease.

The quarantine period lasts until the infectious period of the disease lasts or until you are sure that you have not contracted the disease. You must consult your doctor to know in detail about when your quarantine period can end safely.

Many people in India who have returned from the affected areas or have developed the symptoms after getting in touch with the affected people have been quarantined.

In India, self-quarantining has been proved to be successful in reducing the speed at which the novel coronavirus was earlier spreading across the population.

It may seem to be a vacation from reality or an ideal time to sleep or learn something new. However,  self-quarantining may not be easy. It may be hard for many of us when it comes to staying in isolation away from friends and family.

But if prepared with the possibilities, you may find it easier to cope up with the quarantine during this outbreak.

Keep scrolling to read the following tips to have the best self-quarantine plan in place.

Plan Home Quarantine

Anticipate at least 7-10 days of quarantine at home. Try to procure non-perishable food items like frozen vegetables, powdered milk, frozen food items, etc. so that you don’t have to leave your house and come in contact with other people. Make sure to add the essentials in your first aid kit that includes prescribed as well as non-prescribed medicines.

Isolate Yourself

You must isolate yourself not only from people outside your house but inside too. This means that quarantining includes secluding yourself from your partner, children, old people living with you or other housemates too. Manage to have a designated room for yourself where even pets aren’t allowed. You must not meet any visitor unless extremely important.

Use Face Masks in Quarantine

If you are around people living in your home, face masks are mandatory during the quarantine. One can find P2 or N95 face masks at pharmacy or hardware stores nearby which they should use if taking care of a sick person.

Maintain Respiratory Hygiene

Use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to wash your hands at frequent intervals. Make sure you wash your hands for approximately 20 seconds. Touching your face (nose, mouth, or eyes) is a big NO. Use a tissue to cover or wipe off your mouth when you sneeze and discard it in a closed bin. Also, wash your hands immediately thereafter.

Disinfect Commonly Used Items

Avoiding sharing common household items like towels, bedding, utensils is as important as disinfecting them. Ensure frequently wiping surfaces like countertops, mobile phones, bathrooms fixtures, tables, laptops, etc. with a cleanser. Also, make sure to clean surfaces which may be contaminated with bodily fluids like stool or blood.

Monitor Your Health

Monitor your health and get in touch with a doctor in case the coronavirus symptoms are getting worse. Do not ignore or take self-medication in such a case.

Keep Up The Spirits During Quarantine

Work on reducing your anxiety by understanding the disease. Get information on the virus only from reliable sources and don’t fuel rumours. Make sure you talk to your kids using age-appropriate language and ensure that they are not exposed to every bad news related to the virus.

Try maintaining a daily routine, exercise regularly, eat healthy, talk to your friends and family about the disease or otherwise, via social media, telephone, or e-mail.
Other activities that might help you feel better during quarantine are dancing, yoga, watching web series, doing floor exercises, learning something new online, or playing games online. However, exercise remains the best way to fight depression stress and depression.

Conclusion

Self-quarantining may be hard for those living with the family as well as those who don’t. But you can fight back stress, conflict, and boredom by asking your boss to allow you to work from home. You may involve in cleaning the house by dividing the areas to be cleaned into parts.

Note that relying too much on television and other technology may not a good option.

Remember, things will get to normal and you will get to socialise with your loved ones once again.

Last but not the least, always remember the quote from Mother Teresa,

“Life is a song, sing it; life is a struggle, accept it; life is a tragedy, confront it; life is an adventure, dare it.”

Stay safe and be well!
