Traffic Rules 2019: All changes in fines and penalties

The new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 has been made applicable in the country since September 01, 2019. Under the new regulations, higher fines and stricter penalties are imposed on traffic rule offenders. The aim of enhanced penalties and fines is to curb the increasing violation of traffic rules in the country, thereby increasing people’s safety on the roads.

While under the previous rules, driving an uninsured vehicle, i.e. a vehicle without at least a third party only car insurance, attracted a fine of ₹1,000 and/or punishment up to 3 months, under the new rules, you can be fined ₹2,000 and/or put in jail for up to 3 months for the offence committed for the first time.

Similarly, the fine for driving without a seat belt has been hiked 10 times from ₹100 to ₹1,000 under the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019.
