Top 5 Servicing Tips For Bikes

Although you wash your bike regularly and keep it clean, you may not notice the dust collecting in the auto parts which you don’t check regularly. The constant wear and tear of your bike can reduce the efficiency of your bike’s performance.

Servicing your bike regularly will keep you aware of the condition of your bike as well as help you to sort the problems at the initial state. Servicing your bike is not that difficult. The following are the tips that you can follow to service your bike without any hassle-

  • Oil And Filter Change

The engine oil and the filter of your bike requires to be changed regularly. This is mainly because the oil acts as a lubricant to the engine parts. Overtime, it is possible for the oil to collect dust which decreases the engine efficiency. Changing the oil and the filter regularly will improve the condition of your engine. You can do this in simple steps.

  • Remove the drain plug and drain the oil into a drain tray. Clean the drain plug and check if it is in good condition.
  • Unscrew the old oil filter and replace it with the new one. Make sure to dispose of the old oil filter.
  • Spark Plug

It is common for spark plugs of your bike to show signs of wear and tear. The gap between their electrodes tends to go out of adjustment. You can measure the spark plug gaps with a feeler gauge and adjust it by bending only the side electrode. Check for deposits on their firing ends. These accumulate over a period of time owing to the combustion process. You will have to replace the plugs if they are corroded  or extremely dirty.

  • Adjusting The Drive Chain

Drive chains are supposed to have a certain amount of slack. This slack measurement is usually given in the user’s manual of your bike. The chain tends to stretch with use which requires you to take up the excess slack with the chain adjusters at the end of the swingarm. This is how you can do it -

  • Measure the total amount of slack in the drive chain from a point between the sprockets on the lower run of the chain.
  • Slacken the rear axle nut to adjust the chain tension.
  • Using the adjusters on the ends of the swingarm will help you to adjust the chain tension.
  • Ensure that the wheel alignment marks are the same on each side and tighten the rear axle nut.
  • Check The Brake Pads

Your brake pads are very vulnerable to wear and tear especially when used over a long period of time. This is mainly because of the amount of friction it is exposed to. Thus, it is important to regularly replace the brake pads to have an effective braking system. Most pads are accompanied with indicator grooves, a line or cutouts to indicate the maximum limit of damage. You must remove the pads from the caliper if you can’t see it clearly.

  • Check The Engine Idle Speed

Make sure to check if the engine idles at the correct speed when it is fully warmed up. The idle is nothing but the condition of your engine when it is running without you touching the throttle grip. Your engine runs at the idle speed when you start your bike. The general idle speed is between 1000 and 1500 rpm. Adjust the idle speed using the adjuster knob at the side of the carburettors.

Take Away

Servicing your car at garages is usually expensive. If you want to avoid these costs, having a comprehensive bike insurance policy will take care of these burdening expenses. Having bike insurance is not just mandatory but a policy that will help you financially. Make sure that you have a bike insurance policy that offers maximum coverage and ride safe.
