Although it is understandable to feel apprehension to purchase a used bike, you can ensure a safe transaction if you can keep a few things in mind. Here are some of the most important ones.

  • Verify the Owner

First and foremost, make sure to verify whether the owner is at all genuine. This can be done by demanding their identity proof, their driver's license and other such official documents. If they are on some selling site, check to see if anyone has left any reviews or comments. Withhold from paying out too much at the get-go so that your loss is minimized if in case anything does go wrong. Having basic information such as the name, age, phone number etc. of the seller can also help you defend yourself against potential scammers.

  • Get the Original Registration Certificate and No Objection Certificate

Among other documents that you must acquire while getting a used bike, make sure to get the original registration certificate for the bike and a no-objection certificate. The No Objection Certificate is issued when a bike is sold from one state to another and essentially states that the RTO is alright with the transfer from one RTO to another. It also indicates there are no pending taxes for the vehicle. Having the original registration certificate is important for the transfer of ownership and it contains the official details of the bike.

  • Examine the Bike

Always make sure to thoroughly examine the bike before purchasing it. Do not simply rely on photographs of the internet and if possible, go for a physical inspection. If it is at all not possible, make sure to get photographs from every angle. Ask the previous owner for service records of the bike to see which parts, in particular, might have been damaged and ask for specific pictures. The frequency of servicing will also tell you about the current condition of the bike. You can even request a test drive in order to see how the bike is feeling in your hands.

  • Check the Insurance Details

Make sure to get the details of the two-wheeler insurance the bike is currently under. It is recommended that previous insurances be cancelled and you get fresh insurance for yourself. In this way, you can choose an insurance plan that suits your needs and finances. However, if the previous policy works well for you, the previous owner can transfer it to your name. A third-party bike insurance policy is anyway mandatory to drive a bike in India, so you will have to get one.

Endnotes

Getting a bike can be an exciting affair but do not simply stop at choosing the bike and immediately buying it out. Keep in mind the above tips for a safe transaction wherein you receive the deal that you are looking for.
