Is COVID-19 variant Omicron worse than Delta variant?

The omicron variant is the latest coronavirus variant that has been detected. The Delta variant which was also causing infections across Europe is present. Although information on the omicron variant is not much, there have been observations that have been made regarding its behavior. What is the Omicron Variant?

The Omicron variant is the newest strain or variant of coronavirus that is causing infections around the world. It was first detected in South Africa only a few days ago but has already spread to over 35 countries. It has been observed since then that this is a very fast spreading variant with a surge of cases seen in South Africa. Although it has also been found that the omicron might actually have originated in Europe. Nevertheless, its spread has concerned nations. Most cases that have been detected in other countries till now, have been in people who have recently traveled from foreign countries, particularly from South Africa.

What is the Delta variant?

The delta variant is also a new variant of concern that has been causing a surge in cases in many nations since a few months back. Studies have found that it might be up to two times more contagious than other previously detected variants. For people who are still unvaccinated, it might be even more dangerous due to the possibility of more severe infection. Even vaccinated people can spread the variant to others, also chances of them doing so is for a shorter period of time.

Is COVID-19 variant Omicron worse than Delta variant?

There has been a rise in concern with the emergence of the omicron variant, especially among nations which were already grappling with the delta variant. However, WHO has stated that for now, it has been observed that the omicron is not worse than the delta variant. Although it is more transmissible, it is not more severe than the delta variant. However, studies regarding the variant are still ongoing and it is difficult to give solid conclusions regarding this variant. Nevertheless, there is no need to panic regarding the variant, but what is needed is to be alert and diligent. 

Will Vaccines Work against Omicron?

WHO officials have stated that the vaccines that are being administered right now and have been approved, have worked well against all variants of the coronavirus, which is why it is hoped that it will continue to do so against the omicron variant as well. The vaccine has been seen to reduce the severity of infection from the coronavirus and reduce chances of death from COVID-19. This is why it is crucial that everyone who is eligible gets vaccinated as soon as possible in order to stay protected, and also protect others from the coronavirus.
