Everything We Know So Far About the Omicron Variant

The Omicron variant is a coronavirus variant that has been recently detected in South Africa. Since it has been only a few days since the detection, there is very little information available on the variant. All information that has been achieved is based on observations and must be taken with alertness towards new developments. Here is all that is known till now.

Everything We Know So Far About the Omicron Variant

  • It has mild symptoms

Till now, people affected with the omicron variant have shown milder symptoms than the other dominant variant, the Delta. There have been perhaps less or no reports of loss of smell and taste. The other common symptoms of coughing, sneezing and breathlessness is mostly what is prevalent. However, the variant has mostly affected young people in South Africa, who anyway have a more robust immune system than older people or children, for that matter. Although this is not a conclusive inference, this is what has been observed till now.

  • It might be less severe than the Delta

The other dominant variant of the coronavirus currently is the Delta variant. It has led to a surge in cases in Europe. Officials have stated that the omicron might be causing less severe infection than the Delta variant. The omicron variant has not been directly attributed to any deaths for now, as per reports. It might just be less severe than other variants that have developed but its transmissibility is quite high which is why it is able to infect so many people so fast. However, this is not a solid conclusion as investigations are still ongoing. Nevertheless, there is also no cause for panic due to the omicron variant.

  • Existing vaccines work against Omicron

WHO officials have stated that based on observations till now, there is no reason that existing vaccines will not work against this new variant. During the previous waves of the pandemic, the vaccination process was still in its early stages. By now, most nations of the world are actively vaccinating their population, with approved vaccines. There is definitely a shortage of vaccines in some nations, which should be helped by others so that the global population can be completely vaccinated as soon as possible.

  • Vaccination is of importance

The more the virus spreads, the more are their chances for it to mutate and form new variants. To prevent this from happening, preventative measures must be undertaken by everyone equally. Of all COVID regulations, wearing a mask and getting vaccinated are the most important. Government as well as private facilities across the nation are administering COVID-19 vaccines available to anyone who is above the age of 18. Wearing a mask is also important, especially if you have a fever or are suffering for cough and cold. Even if you are completely vaccinated, you must take care to wear a mask when out in public.

Endnotes

The omicron variant is certainly one of concern, but definitely one to panic on because that will only cause chaos. Instead, everyone must diligently follow the necessary regulations. It has been two years since the pandemic has been upon us and most people are aware of the proper regulations that need to be undertaken due to it. It is also crucial to stay alert to any new developments regarding the Omicron variant and the coronavirus at large. This will only help individuals as well as people around them stay safe and healthy.
