Anti Lock Braking System or ABS is a technology that prevents loss of control of the bike by preventing the wheels from locking when braking. Let’s read all about how it works and why it is important.

Anti-Lock Braking System or ABS is a technology which previously used to be considered useful only for four-wheelers premium. However, over time its usefulness even for two wheelers has been proven time and again. It reduces the possibility of crashes to a great degree and this has been acknowledged even by the Indian government. Therefore, ABS has been made mandatory for bikes above 125 CC after April 2019. Let’s read all about this technology and its importance.

What is ABS?

ABS or Anti-Lock Braking System is a technology that helps prevent skidding by preventing the locking of wheels during braking. This also helps the wheels to stay stable on the road by helping the tires to maintain their grip. When it comes to bikes, they are naturally less stable than four wheelers and pressing the brake too hard can cause it to tip over to the side by locking the front or rear wheel, whereas if you fail to brake promptly you may be unable to avoid a crash.

How Does ABS Work?

The purpose of ABS is to prevent a wheel from locking when the bike brakes. ABS determines the wheel’s speed with speed sensors and other sensors to sense when a wheel is about to lock. It adjusts the braking pressure to stop the wheel from locking, thus helping the bike maintain stability.

What is the Importance of ABS?

The advantage of ABS is that the rider will be unable to notice it during non-emergency braking situations. It only comes into play during emergency situations when it senses that the wheels are about to lock. In such a situation, it regulates the braking pressure and prevents the wheels from stopping to rotate. This ensures continued stability for the bike and prevents skidding. There are many instances in which the ABS system will have saved the rider’s life by reducing braking distance.

Thus, ABS is extremely important as it seriously reduces the number of crashes on the roads. It will help you maintain better control of your bike and prevent skidding and loss of stability when it comes to tricky situations on the road, and thus you absolutely should not go without it.

It is thus an essential technology without which you should not take your bike out on the roads. However, it is important to note it is not suitable for off-roading conditions. When it comes to riding your bike or two wheeler on roads especially in winters when the chances of skidding are high, it can be a real lifesaver.
