Difference Between Accelerated Death Benefit Rider And Accidental Death Benefit Rider

Updated On Jun 19, 2021

An insurance plan provides protective cover for policyholders and helps them as well as their beneficiaries stay financially stable through various situations. It does this through integral benefits that are part of the basic plan as well as through riders. Riders are add-ons that enhance the basic insurance plan. By paying an additional premium, you can stay secure under special circumstances that various riders serve. There are many different types of riders and their availability differs from one plan to another.

Difference between Accelerated Death Benefit Rider and Accidental Death Benefit Rider

A rider is very important if you want to make your insurance plan more comprehensive. Accelerated death benefit rider and accidental death benefit rider are two such riders that are available with some life insurance plans. Here is the difference between them:

Accelerated Death Benefit Rider

Accidental Death Benefit Rider

It is provided to the policyholder against their death benefit and in advance to their death in case they have a chronic or terminal illness that is life-threatening.

This rider provides a payout if the policyholder dies due to any unforeseen accident before the end of the policy term.

This rider pays out the benefit to the policyholder themselves usually when they only have a few years to live and as cash advances. This also reduces the money that is paid out to the beneficiaries later on.

The rider benefit is paid out to the beneficiaries or nominees after the death of the policyholder due to an accident.

Sufficient proof must be provided from a licensed medical practitioner of the terminal illness and the need for an accelerated death rider benefit.

Proof of death must be shown and the accident must meet the criteria of the specific insurance company. To know what entails an accident, you must refer to the product brochure of the particular insurance policy.

Endnotes

Riders are an important component that you must add to your life insurance policy, especially if you are susceptible to special circumstances. For accidental death riders, this can be if your occupation is a risky one and for an accelerated death benefit rider, it is if you are suffering from any terminal illness. They help provide adequate financial help at the hour of need while your basic life insurance plan is still kept active. The premium for riders is separate from the regular premium you would have to pay for your base insurance plan. However, it is largely low-cost and more affordable than a regular life insurance plan.
