One such initiative that was recently introduced by the Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways last year is the New Bharat Series Number Plate. This one-of-a-kind initiative was adopted to ensure that transferring vehicles from one state to another becomes easier and was implemented on 28th August 2021. With an aim to ease the process of transporting vehicles from one Indian state to another, a new number series called the Bharat Series Number Plate has been rolled out. This is a citizen-centric approach that is especially beneficial for Indian citizens who often have to relocate from one Indian state to another to meet professional needs. Now, let us understand important things about this new number series.
Who Is Eligible For New Bharat Series Number Plate?
The New Bharat Series Number Plate is eligible for different groups of people from India such as the following:
- Government /PSU employee
- Defense personnel
- Employees of the central government
- Employees of companies that has its branches in more than 5 Indian states or Union Territory
New Bharat Series Number Plate Format
Unlike the other number plates that are typically used for vehicles in India, the New Bharat Series Number plate format is slightly different. The new format under the Bharat Series is YY BH #### XX as opposed to the traditional numbering system where the format started with the initials of the state. In the traditional format, the initials of the state are followed by the district code which is further followed by alphabets, and finally, there is a four-digit number that is unique for each vehicle. Now, in the current Bharat Series format, the following symbols represent:
- YY stands for the year when the vehicle was registered
- BH represents the Bharat series
- #### indicates any random number between 0000 to 9999
- Finally, XX indicates alphabets ranging from AA - Z
How To Get The New Bharat Series Number?
To apply for the New Bharat Series Number, you need to follow the below steps:
- Filling Out The Online Form: When you purchase a new car, your car dealer will directly ask you to fill out the online form for getting the BH series number. The form is available on VAHAN Portal and for getting the BH series, you need to tick against Bharat Series. Along with this, also fill out all the other required fields.
- Document Submission: After filling out the form, you need to submit the relevant documents which include form 60, an official ID card, and a few other documents.
- Fees Submission: After the documents have been submitted, you now need to pay the required fees.
- Approval By RTO: After all the required steps are completed, the concerned RTO will take the process and issue the New Bharat Series Number for your newly purchased vehicle.
Taxes For New Bharat Series Number Plate
The applicable taxes for New Bharat Series Number Plate is as follows:
- Initially, you need to pay road taxes for 2 years for getting the BH series number plate and after that, you can pay the applicable taxes of the new state you are moving into.
- Along with this you also need to pay the registration fee to the concerned RTO which is unskippable. Please note that this fee varies depending on the type of vehicle. For instance, an electric vehicle has lesser fees as compared to others.

- When moving from one city to another within India, individuals need not apply for new registration with a New Bharat Series Number Plate. Thus, this saves a lot of time as well as efforts that go into the re-registration process.
- As the new registration process is eliminated, the requirement of getting a NOC is also in turn eliminated, with a New Bharat Series Number Plate.
- The unwanted trouble that often arises when you move your vehicle to another state is also reduced with this new series of number plate.
