Important Documents To Carry While Driving A Car

Take a look at some necessary documents that you should carry while driving a car:

1. Car Registration Certificate (RC)

You should hold the registration certificate (RC) of your car while driving. The RC refers to a document that proves the car is registered legally and you have not stolen it. It consists of the car's technical details, the car's registration number, car owner’s name and address, car’s chassis number, etc. If your car gets stopped and checked, this will be the first document you will have to provide.

2. Car Insurance Policy Document

Every car owner should carry at least a third-party car insurance policy document while driving, as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. It means that if traffic police or any other legal authority stops your car on the road, you may be asked to show this document. If you could not produce the car insurance policy document, you can be punished with a fine or imprisonment or both.

It is an official document provided by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) that validates the passing of your driving test and the driver is properly qualified to drive a car. To drive a car without holding an active and valid driving license is illegal and a punishable offence. Also, your car insurance claim may also be rejected in case you are found to be driving a car during an accident without a licence.

4. Pollution Under Control Certificate

Carrying a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate of your car is essential while driving. The certificate declares that smoke or gases emitted from your car complies with the emission standards and emitted smoke or gases from the car neither causes pollution nor are harmful. You can get the PUC certificate from a pollution check kiosk situated at authorized petrol pumps which are issued through a computerized process. The certificate is valid for three to six months and needs to be renewed before its expiry as driving a car without a valid PUC certificate is a punishable offence.
