Updated On Apr 22, 2021

A face mask is a protective covering around the nose and mouth. It was generally used by health professionals during medical procedures earlier. But with the surge of this novel coronavirus, a face mask is the most important weapon used. It protects us from getting infected. The centers of Disease Control and Prevention, suggests that wearing a face mask in public reported having a reduction in coronavirus transmission.

What Kind of Masks to be Used?

There is no specific mask that protects us from being infected solely. Here are some of the masks mentioned that seem to provide good protection against coronavirus:

  • Cloth or Fabric Masks: Fabric masks are easy to wear. The droplets from sneezing and coughing get trapped in these masks. This results in a reduction in the spread of the virus from one person to another. As it is made up of cloth or simple fabric, it is easy to wash. This kind of mask gets wet or dirty easily so wash them regularly after use.
  • Surgical Masks: These are disposable surgical masks. They protect from spray and splashes containing viruses. These masks also filter viruses and prevent them from reaching us. Surgical masks are loose-fit and can be discarded after a single-use.
  • N95 Masks: N95 masks are the most efficient masks as compared to cloth or surgical masks. Due to its high degree of protection, these masks can filter 95% of particles present in the air. These masks are not commonly used by the general public, instead, health professionals use this.
  • Face Masks with Valves: Face masks with attached valves are comfortable to use. It allows the user to breathe out easily. But the presence of the valve does not provide a strong barrier against the virus. An infected individual wearing this mask when breaths out, this valve allows the infected air to go out in the environment. This does not reduce the spread of coronavirus. So this mask may not be a better choice at this point.

How Does the Face Mask Protect us from Coronavirus?

As we now know the various types of face masks and their functions. It is better to prefer cloth or surgical mask.

These masks protect a person from coronavirus transmission. When an infected person wears a mask, the droplets of their sneeze, cough, or saliva get trapped. This would prevent the virus from spreading further.

A face mask is an item of compulsory clothing in today’s time. It is mandatory to wear a mask when going to public places. Face masks protect us actively. Even if you touch your mask accidentally then don’t touch your face or nose without washing or sanitizing your hands.
